I like the new F-Type

It's a tad weird to think the Jaguar F-Type is nearly seven years old. To this day, an F-Type averages 18.4 double takes a day, in Ireland especially.

It remains a good looking car, especially in coupe form, yet Jaguar still feel it is time for a redesign...well a large face-lift at least. Hard act to follow, but they've managed it. The biggest change being the headlights, much lower and much, much slimmer than before. When you go back and look at the old car, it dates before your eyes.

At the launch of the redesigned F-Type, Designer Director, Adam Hatton, said of the updates:

"[It has allowed for a] better crash structure, slipperier aerodynamics and more efficient cooling”

With this new model, Jaguar have proved you can design a car today and not make an absolute hash of it.

Many, who should know better, have released some howlers recently; and they tell us rather wanky things about cohesion and surfacing, to talk around the fact that their car is as ugly as a Blobfish. It's not all their fault, I suppose. Regulation and legislation dictates the boundaries of design like never before. Not an excuse, as Jag have proven; and the fact they tell us it's for legitimate safety and efficiency reasons, well they just score bonus points. I've seen people throw empty criticism saying they followed the trend for massive grilles, but the grille is no bigger than the old car, just the smaller lights and the removal of a central beam make it look larger.

Again, Jaguar didn't have to expalin themselves, but the honesty flowed like wine:

“We want to do things in a Jaguar way, so we don’t want to be brash, but we have to take into account the tastes of our markets, in places like America and China, it’s getting even more ‘look at me’, so we’re trying to mix boldness with Jaguar elegance”. Mr. Hatton, Jim Carey in Liar Liar

In reality would I own one over a Porsche, if I were in such a fortunate situation?

Well it would be a good problem to have, but for the first time ever, with the 911, in it's current 992 form, becoming more of a GT car then ever before, it's a tough call. The 911 has a manual gearbox on the way, which this new-(ish) F-Type doesn't. That could be the deal breaker, but the Jag does have a V8...as I say, it would be a good problem to have. -JQ. @JohnnyQ86
