Hyundai tease the new Tucson

If the 'H' of the Hyundai badge wasn't visible in these mood-lit teaser images, you could have a good game of 'guess the car' in the office.

Is it a Range Rover, a Ford perhaps?

So goes the growing trend of uniformity in modern car design. We can't blame the manufacturers entirely, as designers are increasingly handicapped with how bold they can be with shapes and angles, as legislation and safety dictate dimensions more and more.

Where designers have been able to showcase their individuality is with innovative arrangement of lights. Cars have more lights than ever before. Again, regulation demands daytime-running lights and certain markets around the globe crave the fun-fare-like look of excessive illumination.

The march of technology too has played a hand. LEDs and laser lights allow for a more creative approach to how lights are shaped and incorporated into a design.

All of which has not escaped Hyundai. The one thing that is very clear from these teaser images of the new Tuscon crossover, is you won't mistake it for anything else in your rear view mirror.

Like the entire motoring industry, the Tuscon's new grille is big and bold, but that is where the similarities end.

Hyundai call their new design language "avant-garde Parametric Dynamics design theme".

What that nonsense translates to in English is, they have incorporated their day-time running lights into the lattice of the Tuscon's giant grille to great the crossover's unique look.

Those innovative DRLs appear to be in place of where the headlights would traditionally sit. Therefore, the headlights are probably sitting underneath, in the two openings either side of the front bumper.

This look would relate the Tuscon to it's baby brother in the range, the Kona, which has a similar set-up and if you've ever spotted one of those in your rear-view mirror at night, it certainly grabs your attention. It looking like a 1980s sci-fi movie UFO rather than a prosaic family-car.

The interior image Hyundai have supplied for the new Tuscon looks similarly funky in it's design, all minimalist and swoopy, with digital touch screens and a complete lack of any physical buttons (BOO, but so the trend goes).

Hyundai’s global design boss, Sangyup Lee, said of the new Tuscon's design "With the all-new Tucson, we are introducing its ultimate evolution and a definitive statement about Hyundai’s unstoppable forward momentum.”

We'll see what that translates to on September 15th, when the new Tuscon is fully unveiled.
